Interior design is an art and science devoted to improving the interior of a physical structure to create a more aesthetically pleasing and healthier environment for those using the room. An interior designer is a person who plans, studies, coordinates, and executes these improvement projects. The work of an interior designer can encompass a wide variety of projects from the creation of a new home or apartment to the renovation of an old building. Interior designers often work closely with architects to bring both parties together to find the best solutions for each project.
In most cases, an interior designer’s job will begin with research. They will gather information about the space they are going to decorate and study it so that they can determine what would be the best way to decorate it. Once they have gathered this information they will need to determine how much space they have to work with and what type of furniture and materials would work well within that space. Once they have the research completed, they can then decide what type of interior designers they want to be.
Before Interior designers can become licensed to work in the interior design field they must pass both the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) entrance exams and the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCCIDQ). These two tests are nationally recognized as the standards for qualifying for a career in the interior design field. Interior designers have to pass these two examinations before becoming certified. Once they have passed these two exams, they can begin working. Once certified, they will most likely have to take the General Inspection Exam.
When you are considering enrolling in an interior design program at a college or university check to see if the school has received accreditation. Accreditation means that a school has met the minimum standards of the NCCIDQ which is the National Commission for Interior Decoration and Design. You may also want to check to see if your prospective college has been accredited by another national accrediting agency. You can learn more about the accreditation process by browsing interior design colleges.
After you have earned your degree from a college or university, it is time to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) entrance exams. These exams consist of two sections and both are based on the same principles that are used in the American Society of Interior Designers. The first section is classroom theory and the second is a laboratory exam. The theory part will cover such topics as communication and design, color, room size, form, furnishings, lighting, textures, rugs, wall coverings, and lighting arrangements. The laboratory exam will cover such topics as architectural drafting, structural design, painting and drawing, molding and plastering, tile work, cabinet work, floor and ceiling installation and furniture assembly. Once you pass both the entrance exams, you will be able to work as an interior designer.
If you are interested in the interior designing field, there are many different schools and colleges that offer programs. However, before you enroll in a specific school or college to make sure that it is accredited and has excellent credentials. Another thing to consider is whether or not the school or college that you choose is accredited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NISTA). If a school is accredited by NISTA they are more likely to be a good institution. A reputable school is one that you can trust with your future career and a great investment in your future.
