This arch was made for Denstone School Chapter. It has 9 blocks because it had to span 42 inches. The number of blocks doesn't actually matter (Bristol have only 3, for example)
Each one is made from 300 year old German pine. Spruce for example would split at this size as it slowly dries when kept indoors. Watch out for the phrase "whitewood" in dealers'catalogues - they are not woodworkers and have no idea what things are made of !
The lettering is deeply incised and gilded and a variety of "stone" finishes are available in various colours. These cost around £270, depending on how you want it done.
